I watched as the Lamb opened the first of the seven seals, and I heard one
of the four living creatures say with a voice like thunder, “Come!”
So I
looked, and there came a white horse. Its rider carried a bow, and he was
given a crown, and as a conqueror he rode off in order to conquer.
When the Lamb opened the second seal, I heard the second living being
say, “Come!”
So another horse came out, a bright red one. Its rider was given
permission to remove peace from the earth, so that people would murder one
another, and he was given a large sword.
When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living being say,
“Come!” So I looked, and there came a black horse. Its rider had balance scales in his hand.
I heard something like a voice coming from among the
four living creatures: “A quart of wheat costs a whole day’s wages; three quarts of
barley also cost a day’s wages. But do not damage the oil or the wine.”
When the Lamb opened the fourth seal, I heard the fourth living being
say, “Come!”So I looked, and there came a pale, sickly horse. Its rider was called
Death, and Hades followed close behind. They were given authority over a
quarter of the earth, to kill people with the sword, famine, disease, and wild
animals of the earth. When the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw beneath the altar the persons
who had been murdered because of the Gospel-word of God and their faithful testimony to it.
10 They cried out, “How long, O holy and true
Master, before you judge those who live on the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 A white robe was given to each of them, and they were told to rest[1598] a
little longer until the number was complete, both of their fellow servants and
of their brothers and sisters who would be killed as they had been.
12 I watched as the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and there was a powerful
earthquake. The sun became as black as hairy sackcloth, and the full moon
became blood-red. 13 The stars of the sky fell to the earth, like a fig tree
dropping unripe figs when shaken by a strong wind.
14 The sky was split apart
like a scroll being rolled up, and every mountain and island was moved out
of its place. 15 The kings of the earth, the important people, the military generals, the
rich, the powerful, and everyone, slave or free, hid themselves in the caves
and among the rocks in the mountains.
16 They said to the mountains and the
rocks, “Fall on us, and hide us from the face of the One seated on the throne,
and from the righteous anger of the Lamb,
17 because the great day of their
righteous anger has come, and who can possibly survive it?”
Commentary
Revelation
[1597]
The Gospel of the Kingdom as preached always by Jesus and Paul and all the NT believers.
Heb. 2:3 points to Jesus as the first preacher of salvation.
[1598]
They are to rest in the “sleep of death” (Ps. 13:3), and then they will be woken from that
unconscious condition to rise in the resurrection at the return of Jesus (Dan. 12:2; 1 Cor. 15:23; 1
Thess. 4:13-18, etc). They are seen as clothed, and so the idea of a disembodied soul is foreign here as
to the whole of Scripture.
