“To the angel of the church in Sardis, write this: The one who has the
seven spirits of God and the seven stars says: I know your works, that you
have a reputation for being alive, but you are dead.
Wake up, and strengthen
what remains that is about to die, because I have not found your works
complete in the sight of my God.
So remember what you have received and
heard, obey it and repent. If you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and
you will in no way know when I will come to you.
But you have a few
people in Sardis who have not stained their clothes, and they will walk with
me dressed in white, because they are worthy.
The one who overcomes will
be dressed like them in white, and I will in no way erase his name from the book of life, but will declare his name before my Father and His angels.
6 Let everyone who has ears listen to what the spirit says to the churches.
7 “To the angel of the church in Philadelphia, write this: The one who is
holy and true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one can shut, and
who shuts and no one can open, says: 8 I recognize your works. Look! I have
put in front of you an open door which no one can shut, because you have a
little power, and have obeyed my Gospel-word and have not denied my name. 9 Look!
I will make some from the synagogue of Satan, those who say they are Jews and are
not, but are lying — I will make them come and worship at your feet and
recognize that I have loved you.
10 Because you have kept my command to persevere, I will keep you from the time of testing which is about to come
on the whole world,[1586] to test those who live on the earth. 11 I am coming
quickly. Hold firmly to what you have, so that no one will take away your
crown.
[1587] 12 The one who overcomes, I will make a pillar in the temple of my
God, and he will never leave it. I will write on him the name of my God, and
the name of the city of my God — the new Jerusalem which will come down
out of heaven from my God — and my new name.
[1588] 13 Let everyone who
has ears listen to what the spirit says to the churches.
14 “To the angel of the church in Laodicea, write this: The Amen, the
faithful and true Gospel-witness,[1589] the ruler of God’s creation, says:
15 I
recognize your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were cold
or hot!
[1590] 16 So because you are lukewarm, neither hot nor cold, I am going
to vomit you out of my mouth.
17 Because you say, ‘I am rich and have
gained great wealth, and do not need anything,’ but do not recognize that
you are wretched, miserable, poor, blind and naked,
18 I advise you to buy
from me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich. Buy from me
white clothing to put on so that your shameful nakedness will not be
revealed, and buy ointment to put on your eyes so that you can see.
19 All
those I love, I correct and discipline. So be zealous and repent.
20 Listen! I am
standing at the door and knocking. If anyone hears my voice and opens the
door, I will come to his house to eat with him, and he with me.
[1591] 21 The one
who overcomes, I will give the privilege of sitting with me on my
throne, just as I overcame and sat down with my Father on His throne.
22 Let everyone who has ears listen to what the spirit says to the churches.”
Commentary
Revelation
[1585]
Showing that there is no such thing as “once saved always saved.” Salvation can be lost (Rom.
11:22; Lk. 8:13; Heb. 6:4-8; 10:26ff).
[1586]
This is certainly not by an imagined pre-tribulation rapture. Jesus will come back once only,
after the Great Tribulation. Safety from the time of extreme trouble will be by escaping it on earth.
[1587]
The authority to rule the world with Jesus when he comes back to the earth.
[1588]
Jesus speaks of God as “my God” four times in this verse, showing of course that he himself
is not God. There is only one Lord God according to the creed of Jesus (Mk. 12:29, cited from Deut.
6:4). Jesus is the man Messiah now seated at the right hand of the One God (Ps. 110:1; Mk. 14:62; Acts
7:55-56). See also the Messianic title “lord Messiah” (Lk. 2:11) and “lord, son of David” (Matt 15:22;
20:31). The NT presents Jesus as the promised Messiah, descended from David, supernaturally brought
into existence by God’s creative power (Lk. 1:35). The Trinity was a post-biblical development under
the damaging influence of Greek philosophy. This development caused the creed of Jesus, Christianity’s founder, to be discarded. Mark 12:29 is the basis of all good theology and practice.
[1589]
Jesus was the original preacher of the saving Gospel (Mk. 1:14-15; Lk. 4:43; Heb. 2:3, etc).
This proves the complete falsity of the unfortunate words of C.S. Lewis: “The gospel is not in the
Gospels.”
[1590]
Both hot water and cold water are therapeutically beneficial, but lukewarm water is not.
[1591]
This text is misused when it is offered to potential converts as an invitation “to ask Jesus into
their heart.” Such language is foreign to the very specific language of the NT that converts are to
“repent and believe the Gospel about the Kingdom of God” (Acts 8:12; Mk. 1:14-15).
