This is the revelation from Jesus Messiah.
God[1564]
gave it to him to
show to his servants the things which must happen soon.[1565]
Jesus communicated it clearly
by sending his angel to his servant John,
2 who then testified about everything
he saw concerning the Gospel-word of God,[1566] the testimony which came from
Jesus Messiah.
3 Blessed is the one who reads the words of this prophecy, and
blessed are those who hear and obey what is written in it, because the time is near.
4 From John to the seven churches in the province of Asia:[1567]
Grace and
peace to you from Him who is, who was, and who is to come,[1568]
and from
the seven spirits before His throne,
5 and from Jesus Messiah, the faithful
witness, the firstborn from among the dead,[1569] the ruler over the kings
of the earth. To him who loves us and freed us from our sins by his blood,
6 and has assigned us a Kingdom, as priests to his God and Father[1570]
— to
him be the glory and the power to the ages of the ages. Amen.
7 Look! He is coming
with the clouds, and every eye will see him,[1571]
even those who pierced him.
All the peoples of the earth will mourn because of him. This will certainly
happen. Amen. 8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God,[1572]
“the One who is, who
was, and who is to come, the Almighty.” 9 I, John, your brother and partner with you in the persecution, Kingdom
and perseverance which are in Jesus, was on the island called Patmos because
of the Gospel-word of God[1573]
and the testimony of Jesus.
10 On the Lord’s day[1574]
I was in the spirit, when I heard behind me a loud voice like a trumpet, 11 which
said, “Write down what you see on a scroll, and send it to the seven churches:
Ephesus, Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardis, Philadelphia, and Laodicea.”
12 I turned to see who was speaking to me, and I saw seven golden
lampstands, 13 and among these lampstands was one like a Son of Man.[1575]
He was wearing a robe that reached down to his feet, with a golden sash
across his chest.
14 His head and hair were white like wool, as white as snow,
and his eyes were like a flame of fire. 15 His feet were like polished bronze
refined in a furnace, and his voice was like the roar of many waters.
16 He had
seven stars in his right hand, and a sharp double-edged sword was coming out
of his mouth. His face was shining like the sun at full strength.
[1576] 17 When I saw him I fell at his feet as though dead. He placed his right hand
on me and said, “Do not be afraid. I am the first and the last,
[1577] 18 the one
who lives. I was dead, but look — now I am alive to the ages of the ages. I have the
keys of death and ‘gravedom.’
[1578] 19 So write what you saw, what is, and what
will take place after this.
[1579] 20 The revealed secret of the seven stars which
you saw in my right hand and the seven golden lampstands is this: the seven
stars are the angels of the seven churches, and the seven lampstands are the
seven churches.”
Commentary
Revelation
[1563]
The Revelation is both from him and about him, i.e. everything Jesus taught as Gospel-testimony — the Gospel of the Kingdom, God’s Gospel (Mk. 1:14-15).
[1564]
As on 1300 occasions the word “God,” often “the God,” means the Father of Jesus. On no
occasion does “God” in the Bible mean a triune GOD, a concept entirely foreign to the Jewish heritage
and environment of Jesus (see for his creed Mk. 12:29, citing and affirming the unitarian creed of Deut.
6:4). None of the thousands of the words for “God” in Scripture ever means a triune God.
[1565]
The Book of Revelation is the teaching of Jesus (1 Tim. 6:3) and thus vitally important for all
believers claiming to follow Jesus. The book is largely a mosaic of prophecies, allusions or quotations
from the Hebrew Bible. It also unpacks in greater detail the end-time teaching of Jesus in Matt. 24,
Mark 13 and Luke 21. The final “week” (especially its second half) of Dan. 9:24-27 is expounded in
detail, and this final period of 7 years just before the arrival of Jesus is of vital importance to believers.
Some 2000 years ago Paul was insistent that his converts understand the detail of the final times of this
age, and the rule of antichrist, the Man of Sin, standing in the Temple (2 Thess. 2:4). There are over
400 allusions to the OT prophets and 88 allusions to Daniel, which is the necessary basis for
understanding Revelation. So Jesus emphasizes the need to understand Daniel (“let the reader
understand,” Matt. 24:15).
[1566]
“Word of God” is not just a synonym for the Bible (the Bible calls itself “Scripture”). In the
NT “the word” or “the word of God” is the “in-house” “code-word” for the saving Gospel of the
Kingdom as first preached by Jesus (Heb. 2:3; Mk. 1:14-15) and constantly preached by the NT
community under its apostolic leadership. The Gospel begins with the Gospel as Jesus preached it (see
Mk. 1:1; Lk. 4:43; 5:1; Acts 8:3, 4, 12 and many other examples of “word” = Gospel, especially Mt.
13:19; Lk. 8:11-12).
[1567]
What we know as Asia Minor or Turkey today.
[1568]
This is the equivalent in Greek of the name of God, Yahweh, based on the verb “to be” in Ex. 3:14. Note that Jesus is never the Almighty, Pantokrator, El Shaddai. The Almighty is invariably the Father
[1569]
The mention of death shows that the person indicated cannot be God! God is immortal (1 Tim.
6:16); the Messiah Jesus, Son of God, died (Rom. 5:10). An immortal person cannot die!
[1570]
God is called the God of Jesus often in the NT. As we have mentioned many times, the word
“God” never means a triune God in Old or New Testaments. The idea of a God in three Persons is
absolutely alien to the Bible and is a much later and gradual development, representing a departure
from Scripture. This is known well to many scholars, exegetes and historians.
[1571]
The idea of an invisible Second Coming is quite false to the New Testament. 1914 (or any
other proposed date, now past) certainly did not mark the inauguration of the Kingdom of God, nor the
coming of Jesus. Jesus will return after the future Great Tribulation (Mt. 24:29-30) and it will be a
single, visible event with momentous effects for the future of the world. Satan will then be bound so
that he can no longer deceive the nations (Rev. 20:2-3).
[1572]
This is of course a reference to the Father, not Jesus who is mentioned separately in v. 5. Jesusis nowhere called “the Lord God,” and never called the Almighty, pantokrator in Greek or El Shaddai
in Hebrew
[1573]
The one saving Gospel of the Kingdom of God, preached first by Jesus (Heb. 2:3).
[1574]
Not the ordinary expression “day of the Lord,” the future coming of Jesus, but the technical
term “dominical day,” probably a reference to Sunday as the day marking the new creation. “Dominical
day” may nevertheless also refer to the future day of God’s intervention at the Parousia of Jesus.
[1575]
The Son of Man is the figure revealed in Dan. 7 and this was Jesus’ favorite self-designation.
It means “human being” and reminds us of 1 Tim. 2:5, the creedal statement which shows that there is
one God, the Father ,and one man Messiah as our mediator. This is exactly the truth given us by the
prophetic utterance of Ps. 110:1 where Yahweh speaks to “my lord” not “my Lord.” Adoni, my lord, is
the title of non-Deity (all 195 times), in this case the perfect title for the supremely exalted human,
Messianic figure, Jesus.
[1576]
Reminding us of the appearance of the future resurrection glory of the saints, as described by
Jesus in Matt. 13:43, quoting Dan. 12:3.
[1577]
Jesus is the first and last in the category specified by the context. He is certainly not GOD,
which would make two GODs! He is the first and last who died. God cannot die (1 Tim. 6:16). So Jesus
cannot be GOD. He is the first and last, beginning and end of the saving process, and he is the agent of
the One God, his Father. Jesus defined the Father as “the only one who is true GOD” (Jn. 17:3).
[1578]
Hades, the world of all the dead who are currently asleep, non-conscious, until a future
resurrection (Ecc. 9:5, 10).
