Jesus went to a synagogue again, and a man was there with a crippled
hand. Some were watching Jesus to see if he would heal the man on the
Sabbath, because they wanted to accuse him.Jesus said to the man with the
crippled hand, “Come here and stand in front of everyone.” He asked them,“Is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath? To save a life or to
kill?” But they kept silent. After looking around at them with anger,
saddened by their hard hearts, he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.”
The man stretched out his hand, and it was healed. The Pharisees left and
immediately began to plot with the Herodians as to how they might kill Jesus.Jesus returned to the sea with his disciples, and a large crowd followed
him. They were from Galilee, Judea,Jerusalem, Idumea, beyond the Jordan,
and Tyre and Sidon. This large crowd came to him because they heard about
everything he was doing.Jesus told his disciples to have a small boat ready
in case the crowd crushed him, because he had healed so many people that
all the sick were pressing towards him so they could touch him.Whenever
the evil spirits saw him they would fall down in front of him and shout, “You
are the Son of God!”But he sternly warned them not to reveal who he was.Jesus went up a mountain and called those he wanted, and they came to him.He chose twelve to be with him, and to send them out to preach the Gospel, and to have authority to cast out demons. These are the twelve he
chose: Simon, whom he called Peter;James the son of Zebedee and his
brother John, whom he called Boanerges, meaning “sons of thunder”;Andrew, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, James the son of
Alphaeus, Thaddaeus, Simon the Zealot;and Judas Iscariot, who betrayed
him.Jesus went into a house, but such a large crowd gathered again that he
and his disciples could not even eat a meal. When his family heard about it,
they went to take charge of him, saying, “He has lost his mind.”But the
religious leaders who had come from Jerusalem were saying, “He is
possessed by Beelzebul. By the authority of the ruler of the demons, he is
expelling demons.”
But Jesus called them over to him, and in parables he said to them, “How can Satan cast out Satan?A kingdom divided against
itself cannot stand.A household divided against itself cannot stand.
If
Satan attacks himself and is divided, he cannot stand; he will not last long! But if someone tries to break into the house of a strong man and take his things, he will not get far in his theft unless he first ties up the strong man.“I am telling you the truth: sins and blasphemies can be forgiven, but if
someone blasphemes against the holy spirit they can never be forgiven,
because they are guilty of a sin against the Age to Come.”
30 Jesus said this
because they were accusing him of having an evil spirit.[253] 31 Then Jesus’ mother and brothers arrived and waited outside. They sent a
message to him, asking him to come out. 32 The crowd sitting around him said
to him, “Your mother and brothers are outside, asking for you.” 33 Jesus
answered, “Who are my mother and my brothers?” 34 Looking around at
everybody sitting there, he said, “These are my mother and my brothers. 35 Whoever does the will of God[254]
is my brother, and sister, and mother.”

Mark
[252]
Not “an eternal sin,” but a sin against the obvious activity of God through His spirit. That kind
of sin would result in being excluded from salvation in the coming age of the Kingdom of God on
earth.

A similar editorial comment by Mark occurs in 7:19 where Mark adds that “Jesus said this,
thus making all foods clean.” (Paul said the same thing in Rom. 14:14, 20.) The Levitical food laws of
Lev. 11 are not part of New Covenant obedience. No one is to interfere with this Christian freedom, in
matters of eating and drinking and in regard to the Jewish calendar — annual feasts, new moons and
weekly sabbath, which are a shadow of the Messiah who has come (Col. 2:16-17). “Circumcision” is
no longer “made with hands.” And circumcision implies “the whole law,” in the letter (see Gal. 4 and 5
where Paul works hard to prevent believers from falling for what today might be called the “Jewish
roots” movement, a denial of the freedom of the New Covenant). Paul preached against physical
circumcision for all believers, Jewish and Gentile alike (Gal. 5:2-11).

Doing God’s will is not a vague “doing good” but a commitment to obedience to the Gospel of
the Kingdom as Jesus preached it (see Heb. 5:9; Rom. 1:5; 16:26; Jn. 3:36 for the NT summaries of the
faith which leads to salvation).
