Therefore let us fear that, while the promise of entering His rest remains
open, any one of you may come short of reaching it.
For indeed we have had the
Gospel preached to us, just as they did, but the Gospel-word they heard did them no
good, because they did not believe it.
But we who
have believed will enter that rest, while He said about others, “As I swore
in My anger, they will not enter My rest.” Yet His works were finished
from the foundation of the world.
For He has said somewhere about the
seventh day, “God rested on the seventh day from all His works,”
5 and to
repeat the words quoted earlier, “They will not enter My rest.”
6 Therefore it
remains for some to enter it, yet those to whom the Gospel was preached
before failed to enter because of disobedience.
[1389] 7 So God again sets a certain
day, “Today,” speaking through David a long time afterwards, as was quoted
before, “Today if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” 8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken afterward
about another day. 9 So there remains a future time of rest[1390]
for the people of
God.
10 For the one who enters His rest has himself also rested from his
works, as God did from His.
11 Let us therefore work hard[1391]
to enter that
rest, so that no one falls by following their example of disobedience.
12 For the Gospel-word of God is living and active and sharper than any two-edged
sword, piercing even to the dividing of soul and spirit, of joints and marrow,
and able to discern the thoughts and intentions of the mind.
[1392] 13 And there is
no creature hidden from God’s sight, but all things are naked and exposed to
the eyes of Him to whom we must give an account.
14 So since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens,
Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold tightly to our confession.
15 For we do not
have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who
has been in all ways tempted as we are,[1393]
yet without sin.
16 Let us therefore draw near with boldness to the throne of grace, so that we may
receive mercy and find grace to help us in time of need.
Commentary
Hebrews
[1388]
It would be completely at variance with this verse to say that Jesus the Son was active in the
Genesis creation!
[1389]
Another of many clear texts which make obedience to God and Jesus the absolute criterion of
true faith (cp. 5:9).
[1390]
This is certainly not a reference to weekly Sabbath observance since the whole of the OT
calendar is now a “shadow” replaced by the substance which is the person of the risen Messiah (10:1-
10; Gal. 4:10; Eph. 2:14; Col. 2:16-17). Paul contrasts the shadow calendar negatively (to de soma)
with the body which is Christ’s.
[1391]
Compare the words of Jesus: “Agonize to enter [the Kingdom of God] through the narrow
gate” (Lk. 13:24).
[1392]
In the New Covenant it is Jesus who is able to search the minds and hearts (Rev. 2:23).
[1393]
A decisive text against the so-called Deity of Jesus. God cannot be tempted (James 1:13), but
Jesus was. Jesus remained sinless.
