Therefore we ought to pay closer attention to what we have heard, so that
we do not drift away.
For since the Law spoken through angels proved firm, and every violation of it and act of disobedience to it received its just penalty,
3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation? This salvation had its
beginning when spoken through the lord, and was confirmed to us by those
who heard him.
4 God corroborated their witness by signs, wonders,
various miracles, and gifts of holy spirit distributed according to His own
will.
5 For He did not subject the world order to come,[1378]
about which we are
speaking, to angels.
6 One has somewhere testified, “What is man that
You take note of him, the son of man that You are concerned about him?
7 You made him for a little while lower than the angels. You have crowned
him with glory and honor, 8 and You have put all things in subjection under
his feet.” For in subjecting all things to him, He left nothing that is not
subject to him. But at present we do not yet see all things subjected to him. 9 But we do see him who was made for a little while lower than the angels,
Jesus, because of his suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, so that
by the grace of God he would experience death on behalf of everyone.
10 For it was fitting
for Him, for whom are all things and through whom are all things, in bringing
many children to glory,[1379]
to make the pioneer of their salvation perfect
through sufferings.
11 For both he who makes holy and those being made
holy are all from one Person. That is why he is not ashamed to call them
brothers and sisters:
12 “I will declare Your name[1380]
to my brothers. Among the congregation I will sing Your praise.” 13 Again, “I will put my trust in Him.”
And again, “Look, here I am with the children[1381]
God has given me.”
14 Since then the children share in flesh and blood, he also shared in the
same, so that through death he would bring to nothing the one who has the
power of death, that is, the Devil,
15 and free all those who were slaves all
their lives to the fear of death.
16 For most certainly his concern is not for
angels, but he is concerned about the descendants of Abraham.
17 Therefore
he was obligated to be made like his brothers and sisters in every way, so that he could
become a merciful and faithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to
make atonement for the sins of the people.
18 Since he himself suffered being
tempted,[1382]
he is able to help those who are tempted.
Commentary
Hebrews
[1377]
In Old Testament times, when the Son of God did not yet exist.
[1378]
This has been a discussion of the glorified second Adam to whom God has assigned the
control of the inhabited earth of the future, in the future Kingdom. Jesus was promoted to his present
position of supremacy under the One God. You cannot be promoted to that position if you are already
God!
[1379]
The same destiny of rulership in the future Kingdom is promised for Jesus and his true
followers.
[1380]
“Name” is everything that God stands for, His character, His attributes, His amazing
immortality program being worked out in Messiah.
[1381]
Jesus’ children would be those created, begotten, by Jesus’ Gospel preaching. The Gospel of
the Kingdom is the seed of regeneration (Lk. 8:11-12). It is the indispensable basis for salvation. The
Devil knows of this seed of salvation and immortality and exerts maximum energy to prevent the
Gospel of the Kingdom from lodging in the mind of the potential convert. Paul in the same way became
the father of Timothy using the Gospel of the Kingdom as the agent of the new birth. Alternatively,
“children” might be a reference to the Father’s sons and daughters.
[1382]
It should be evident that GOD cannot be tempted! The proposition that Jesus is God and that
Jesus was tempted is incoherent. “God cannot be tempted” (James 1:13). Nor can God die (1 Tim.
6:16). Jesus the Son of God died. The inference that Jesus is not GOD is obvious.
