So imitate God, as dearly loved children imitate their Father.
Conduct
yourselves in love, just as the Messiah loved us and gave himself up for us, as
a sweet-smelling offering and sacrifice to God.
But sexual immorality or any impurity or coveting should not even be
mentioned among you, as is right for saints.
And there should be no vulgar speech, foolish
talking, or crude joking, which are inappropriate, but rather giving thanks.
For you can be sure of this: no sexually immoral or impure or covetous
person, who is an idolater, will have any inheritance in the Kingdom of the
Messiah and God.
6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for it is because of these things
that the righteous anger of God is coming on the disobedient.
[1210] 7 So do not participate with them,
8 because you were once
darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Conduct yourselves as children of
light,
9 for the fruit of the light is in all that is good and right and
true,
10 as you discern what is pleasing to the Lord. 11 Do not participate in the
fruitless works of darkness, but instead expose them,
12 as it is
shameful even to speak of the things which are done by them in secret.
13 But
everything that is exposed by the light becomes visible, and everything
that is made visible can become light.
14 That is why it says, “Wake up, you who are
asleep, and arise from the dead, and the Messiah will shine on you.”
15 So watch carefully how you conduct yourselves, not as unwise
but as wise,
16 making the most of your time, because the days are evil.
17 So
then do not be foolish, but become wise by understanding what the will of the Lord is.
18 Do not
get drunk on wine,[1211]
which leads to ruin, but go on being filled with spirit.
19 Speak to one another in psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, singing and
making music with your hearts to the Lord;
20 giving thanks always for
everything in the name of our lord Jesus Messiah to God, who is the Father; 21 being subject to one another in the fear of Messiah. 22 Wives, be subject to your own husbands, as to the lord.
23 For the husband is the head of the wife, just as the Messiah is the head of the church, his body, and is himself its savior.
24 Just as the church is subject to the
Messiah, so wives should be to their husbands in everything.
25 Husbands, love your wives, just as the Messiah loved the church and
gave himself up for her
26 to make her holy, having cleansed
her by the washing of water with the Gospel-word,
27 so that he may present the
church to himself in glory, without spot or wrinkle or any blemish, but
holy and blameless.
28 In this way husbands should love their own wives as they do
their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.
29 For no one ever
hated his own body, but nourishes and takes care of it, just as the Messiah also does for
the church,
30 because we are members of his body.
31 “For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become
one flesh.”
32 This mystery is great, but I am speaking about Messiah and the
church.
33 Nevertheless each of you must also love his own wife as himself, and
the wife must respect her husband.

Ephesians
[1209]
I.e., will not be saved.
[1210]
Recalling the telling words of Jesus in John 3:36.
[1211]
Wine, oinos in Greek, is of course alcohol and not grape juice. It is permitted for celebration
in moderation. Paul could not have written “Do not get drunk on grape juice”!
