From Paul, an Apostle of Messiah Jesus by the will of God, for the promise of Life in Messiah Jesus,
to Timothy, my beloved
spiritual child: Grace, mercy and peace from God who is the Father and from Messiah Jesus our lord.
[1340] 3 I am giving thanks to God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as did
my ancestors, as I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day.
4 Remembering your tears, I am longing to see you again so that I may be filled
with joy.
5 I remember too your genuine faith which was first living in your
grandmother Lois, then in your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that it is
in you.
6 That is why I remind you to keep burning strongly the gift of God that is in you
through the laying on of my hands. 7 For God did not give us a spirit of
timidity, but one of power, love and self-discipline.
8 So then never be ashamed of the Gospel-testimony of our lord nor of me
his prisoner. Instead share with me in suffering for the Gospel, by the power
of God.
9 He is the One who saved us, inviting us with a holy calling, not because of
our works but because of His own purpose and grace,[1341] which was given to us in
Messiah Jesus before the ages of time,
[1342] 10 but has now been revealed by the
appearing of our savior Messiah Jesus. He abolished death and brought life
and immortality to light by means of the Gospel.
[1343] 11 God appointed me a
herald and Apostle and teacher of this Gospel,
12 and that is why I am now
suffering these things. But I am not ashamed, because I know the one I have
believed and I am convinced that he is able to guard what has been entrusted
to me until that Day.
13 Hold on tightly to that pattern of health-giving words which
you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Messiah
Jesus.
[1344] 14 Guard that good treasure entrusted to you, through holy spirit which lives in us.
15 You know that everyone in the province of Asia abandoned me, including Phygelus and Hermogenes.
16 May the lord grant mercy to the
household of Onesiphorus because he often refreshed me and was not
ashamed of my chains.
17 When he was in Rome he diligently sought me out
and found me.
18 May the lord grant that he will find mercy from the Lord on
that Day. You know very well all the ways he served in Ephesus.
Commentary
2 Timothy
[1339]
The Greek literally is “God Father,” or Father God. The word “God” refers 1300 times in the
NT to the Father who is “the only one who is true God” (Jn. 17:3). Jesus is called “god” once in Heb.
1:8 (Ps. 45:6), and Thomas in John 20:28 recognizes finally that in seeing the Messiah one is seeing
God, who is perfectly expressed in His unique Son (Jn. 14:9).
[1340]
Jesus is the lord Messiah (Lk. 2:11), definitely not the Lord God, which would make two Gods and thus break the first commandment. The title “our lord” is derived from the centrally important and definitive Ps. 110:1 where the Messiah is “my lord,” adoni, which in all of its 195 occurrences never means God. Adoni, my lord, gives us the expression “our lord Jesus Messiah,” repeatedly used of Jesus. The blind men recognized the Messianic title “lord” when they appealed to Jesus as “lord, son of David” (Mt. 20:30; cp. 15:22). It has been observed that the title “lord” is applicable to God, other superiors, and even a gardener (Jn. 20:15).
[1341]
The Gospel of the grace of God is defined as the Gospel about the Kingdom in Acts 20:24-25.
God’s great plan and purpose is to grant immortality to human beings who obey Jesus (Heb. 5:9).
[1342]
Heb. 1:2 says that God made “the ages” with Messiah in mind, and even before those ages
began the divine plan had been conceived.
[1343]
The one Gospel of the Kingdom as first preached by Jesus (Mk. 1:14-15; Lk. 4:43; Heb. 2:3)
and by all the NT writers (Paul in Acts 19:8; 20:24-25; 28:23; 30, 31; cp Acts 8:12).
[1344]
The same faith and preaching of the Gospel of the Kingdom as modeled by Jesus himself (Lk.
4:43; Mk. 1:14-15). Faith in Jesus must never be divorced from belief in and obedience to the words of
Jesus, beginning in Mark 1 and not forgetting Jesus’ foundational definition of God in Mark 12:29.
