All who are under the yoke as servants are to regard their own masters as
worthy of all respect, so that God’s name and the teaching may not be spoken against.
And those who have masters who are believers should show them
no less respect because they are brothers, but should serve them even more
conscientiously, because those who benefit from their service are believers
and beloved. Teach and urge these things.
If anyone teaches other doctrines and does not agree with the health-giving words, namely the teachings given by our lord Jesus Messiah, and thus with the teaching that promotes godliness, 4 he is conceited,
understanding nothing, but has an unhealthy craving for disputes and
arguments over words. This leads to envy, dissension, slander, evil
suspicions
5 and constant quarrels among people whose minds are corrupted, who are deprived of the truth, and who imagine that godliness is a way to financial gain.
6 Now godliness along with contentment is a great
gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, so we can take nothing out
either.
8 If we have food and clothes we are to be content with that.
9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and are trapped by many foolish and
harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction.
10 For the love
of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it some have strayed
from the faith and pierced themselves with a world of pain.
11 But you, man of God, run from all those things; instead pursue
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, perseverance and gentleness.
12 Fight the
good fight of the faith. Take hold of the Life of the Age to Come to which
you were invited and for which you made a good public confession in front
of many witnesses.
13 In the presence of God who gives life to all things, and
Messiah Jesus, who gave his good confession before Pontius Pilate, I charge
you
14 to obey this command without fault or blame until the appearing of our
lord Jesus Messiah,
15 which God will bring at the right time. He is the blessed
and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords.
16 He is the only one
who has immortality[1338] and lives in unapproachable light, and no human has seen or can see Him. To Him be the honor and dominion of the coming age! Amen. 17 Command those who are rich in this present age not to be arrogant or to
set their hope on the uncertainty of riches, but to set their hope on
God who richly provides us with all things to enjoy.
18 Instruct them to do
good, to be rich in good works and to be generous, sharing with others.
19 In
this way they are storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for
the Age to Come, so that they may take hold of the life that really is life.
20 Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to you, avoiding the profane chatter
and contradictions of that system of “knowledge” which is falsely named.
21 By professing it, some people have veered away from the faith. Grace be with
you all.
Commentary
1 Timothy
[1337]
Everything in the NT, salvation itself, depends on our adherence to Jesus by believing and
practicing his teaching (Jn. 7:16), summarized as the Gospel of the Kingdom (Mk. 1:14-15; Matt.
13:19). The Devil’s main objective is to stop people believing in the word of the Gospel of the
Kingdom (Lk. 8:11-12; Mk. 4:11-12).
[1338]
The Father is the One God 1300 times in the NT. He alone has immortality inherently. God
cannot be born or die. God conferred immortality on Jesus and promises immortality to the faithful in
the resurrection to come at the return of Jesus (1 Cor. 15:23).
