This saying is trustworthy: “If any man aspires to the office of elder
he desires a noble work.”
2 An elder, then, must be above reproach, the
husband[1328]
of one wife, temperate, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable,
an able teacher,
3 not a drunkard, not violent, but gentle, peaceable, free from
the love of money.
4 He should manage his own household competently,
keeping his children under control with all dignity.
5 But if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he take care of God’s church?
6 He must not be a new convert, or he might become arrogant and fall
into the same condemnation as the Devil did.
[1329] 7 He also must have a good
reputation with outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace and the
Devil’s trap.
8 Similarly, deacons should be honorable, not hypocritical, not
given to excessive drinking,[1330]
not greedy,
9 holding the revealed truths of
the faith with a clear conscience.
10 And they must first be tested, and if
they prove themselves blameless then let them serve as deacons.
11 Their
wives, too, must be honorable, not slanderers, but temperate and faithful in
everything.
12 Deacons must be husbands of one wife, and competently manage their children and their own household.
13 For those who have
served well as deacons acquire a good standing for themselves and great
confidence in the faith which is in Messiah Jesus.
14 I am hoping to come to you soon, but I am writing these instructions to you so that
15 if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to behave in God’s household
which is the church of the living God, the support and foundation of the truth.
16 And most certainly the revealed truth of our faith is great: he who[1331] was manifested as a human person, vindicated in spirit, seen by angels, preached among the Gentiles, believed in the world, taken up in glory.

Bishops, pastors and elders have the same rank in the NT. They are different ways of
describing the leaders and teachers of the church.
[1328]
Paul did not burden women with being in charge of the church groups. The leadership role he
confines to persons who are husbands of one wife. This of course means if they are married, which
would normally be the case. Paul recognized a celibate man to be perfectly valid for ministry, and Paul
himself was apparently not married.
[1329]
Showing that the Devil exercised free will to rebel against God. He was condemned for his
rebellion (Gen. 3:14-15; Rom. 16:20; Rev. 20:2-3).
[1330]
Excess of alcohol is condemned in Scripture, but not alcohol (wine and strong drink) in itself.
There is a huge difference between drunkenness and the appropriate use of alcohol for celebration and
for the lord’s supper. Jesus turned 120 gallons of water into wine, for purposes of celebration at a
wedding. The so-called “temperance” movement was actually a prohibition movement, going beyond
Scripture.
[1331]
The KJV is based on a corrupted manuscript here, reading “God was manifested…” The Greek has “he who was manifested…” referring to Jesus as the Son of God, defined by Luke 1:35.
