About the times and seasons, brothers and sisters, you have no need that
anything be written to you.
For you know well that the Day of the Lord will
come like a thief in the night.
When people are saying “We have peace and safety,”
then sudden destruction will come on them, like birth pains on a pregnant
woman, and they will not escape.
But you, brothers and sisters, are not in
darkness, so that the day would surprise you like a thief,
because you are all
children of light and children of day. We do not belong to the night nor to darkness, 6 so let us not sleep as others do, but let us be wide awake and
sober. 7 For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk do it at
night.
8 But since we belong to the day let us be sober, putting on the
breastplate of faith and love, and the helmet of the hope of salvation.
9 For
God has not destined us for His anger, but for obtaining salvation through our
lord Jesus Messiah.
10 He died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep
in death,[1306] we will come to life together with him. 11 So encourage one another and
build each other up, just as you are doing.
12 We ask you, brothers and sisters, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the lord and admonish you.
13 Honor
them in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
14 We urge
you, brothers and sisters, to admonish the undisciplined, encourage the
discouraged, support the weak, and be patient with everyone.
15 See that no
one returns evil for evil to anyone, but always seek what is good for one
another and for all.
16 Always rejoice.
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In everything
give thanks, because this is the will of God in Messiah Jesus for you.
19 Do not
quench the spirit;
20 do not treat prophecies with contempt,
21 but examine everything,
and hold firmly to what is good.
22 Avoid every form of evil.
23 Now may the God of peace Himself make you completely holy, and may
your whole spirit, soul, and body[1307] be kept blameless at the coming of our lord
Jesus Messiah. 24 He who calls you is faithful, and He will do this.
25 Brothers and sisters, pray for us.
26 Greet all the brothers and sisters with a holy kiss.
27 I solemnly command you in the
lord to have this letter read to all the brothers and sisters.
28 The grace of our lord Jesus Messiah be with you.
Commentary
1 Thessalonians
[1305]
Enlightened by the saving truth of the Gospel. Salvation is impossible without “a passion for
truth in order to be saved” (2 Thess. 2:10).
[1306]
This is proof of the state of the dead up to the moment of resurrection. They are unconscious
in sleep, not already being rewarded or punished, which would throw the whole NT scheme and
program into confusion.
[1307]
This one verse is not meant to be a “scientific” analysis. “Soul” usually refers to the whole
personality, “spirit” more to the mind and intellect. “Body” often also refers to the whole person (Rom.
12:1). There is no significant difference between soul and spirit (Lk. 1:46-47). Each word has a range
of meanings. “Soul” never means an immortal soul, which is a pagan idea (see our booklet WhatHappens When We Die? At focusonthekingdom.org).
