See what love the Father has given to us, so that we may be
called children of God — and that is what we are. That is why the world
does not recognize us, because they did not recognize him. 2 Beloved, we are
children of God now,[1529] and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We do know that when he is revealed[1530] we will be like him, because we will see him just as he is. 3 Everyone who has that hope in him purifies himself, just as
he is pure.
4 Everyone who practices sin also practices lawlessness; sin is lawlessness.
5 You know that he was revealed to take away sins; there is no sin in him.
6 Whoever lives in him does not continue sinning; whoever continues in sin
has not understood[1531] him or known him. 7 Little children, do not let anyone
deceive you. The one who does what is right is righteous, just as he is
righteous. 8 The one who practices sin is of the Devil, as the Devil has been
sinning from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was revealed: to
destroy the Devil’s works. 9 Everyone who has been fathered by God does not
continue in sin, because His seed[1532] remains in him, and so he cannot
continue in sin because he has been fathered by God. 10 By this the children of
God and the children of the Devil are clearly revealed: everyone who does not do what is right is not of God, nor those who do not love their brothers
and sisters. 11 This is the message you have heard from the beginning: we should love
one another, 12 unlike Cain, who was of the Evil One and murdered his
brother. And why did he murder him? Because he did what is evil, and his
brother did what is right. 13 So do not be surprised, brothers and sisters, if the world hates you. 14 We
know that we have passed over from death to life because we love the brothers
and sisters. The one who does not love remains in death. 15 Whoever hates his
brother or sister is a murderer,[1533] and you know that no murderer has the life
of the Age to Come in him. 16 By this we came to know love: he laid down his life for us, and so we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers and sisters. 17 But
whoever has the world’s material possessions and sees his brother or sister in need, and
shuts off any compassion for him, how can God’s love live in such a person? 18 Little children, let us not love with words only, but in action and truth. 19 By
this we will know that we are of the truth, and we persuade our conscience
before Him, 20 that if our conscience condemns us, God is greater than our
conscience and knows all things. 21 Beloved, if our conscience does not
condemn us, we have boldness before God, 22 and whatever we ask we receive
from Him, because we keep His commands and do the things that are
pleasing in His sight. 23 This is His command: that we believe in the name[1534] of His Son Jesus
Messiah, and love one another, just as he gave us the commandment. 24 The person who
keeps His commands lives in Him, and He in him. By this we know that He
lives in us: by the spirit He has given us.
Commentary
1 John
[1528]
Not by adoption but by rebirth as sons and daughters which brings about a “genetic”
relationship with the Father who “begat us,” gave us new existence through the seed which is the
Gospel of the Kingdom (Mt. 13:19; Lk. 8:11).
[1529]
Certainly not just in the fetal stage, but born from God: “Having been born again…desire the milk of the word” (1 Pet. 1:23; 2:2). James says, “He brought us forth” (James 1:18).
[1530]
At Jesus’ Second Coming, Parousia.
[1531]
Literally “have not seen him.” The sense is “seeing with the mind,” not literally.
[1532]
A fundamentally important reference to the Gospel of the Kingdom as the essential seed
causing rebirth. Luke 8:11 (cp. Mt. 13:11) reports Jesus as giving that definition of seed. Peter speaks
of the Gospel as seed in 1 Peter 2:23-25 and relates it as did Jesus to rebirth. Christians become part of
a family destined for immortality, for which the spirit now is the downpayment guarantee of future
glory and immortality.
[1533]
The brutal, unrepented murder of the unitarian scholar Michael Servetus in 1553 by religious
reformer John Calvin ought to give pause to all who align themselves with Calvin.
[1534]
The “name” of the Son of God stands for his whole character, teaching and Gospel agenda.
